I was told about Billy on the Ducks Unlimited website and came he came highly recommend. My wife bought my dog, Ranger, for my birthday in December of 2008. I had contacted Billy a couple of times with some issues that I was having training Ranger while he was a puppy. Billy was more than willing to help me out over the phone since I was over 3 hours away. When Ranger turned 6 months old, he went to Billy. Billy worked with him all summer and into the early fall. My dog is a very, very high strung dog. Billy was able to harness his over eagerness and wild ways to get him to do what he wanted in a controlled way. I would call Billy every week to find out how Ranger was doing and he would give me a great detailed overview of how he had been doing. I brought him home for the fall hunting season and he did amazing. At the age of 13 months, Ranger had 5 swan retrieves under his belt as well as a few ducks and geese. In February of 2009, I took Ranger back to complete his training. In April, I found out I would be deploying to Afghanistan. With my wife being in the Army as well, she is very busy, and I didn’t want Ranger to become a house dog. Billy worked with me to be able to provide Ranger a place to stay at his kennel and still train him while I was gone. Ranger has been with Billy for over a year and a half now since I’ve been gone. He has worked with him so much and been so cooperative, I could not ask for anything more. Since I’ve been gone, Ranger has earned his Started and Seasoned Titles and will be earning his Finished title and will be competing in The Grand this fall (Oct 2010) at the age of 2 ½. Ranger has a lot of natural ability, but with his high eagerness to please and hyperness, he can be quite a handful to handle. Billy has been able work with and teach Ranger to just trust him and he will get him to the bird if need be. Billy has the most reasonable rates that anyone could ask for and is more than willing to work with you if you have special circumstances, like I did. I wouldn’t take my dog to anyone other than Billy. I have and will continue to recommend no one but Billy for people to take their dogs to for training. Billy can do amazing things. As long as the dog has the desire and want to learn and retrieve, Billy can work with it and turn it into a great dog.

I met Billy two years ago on a gun dog forum when he replied to a question about gun shyness. I had my dog with a trainer and we was doing great until someone threw a firecracker under a table where my dog was sleeping. The first trainer couldn’t solve the issue and I even took him to where I purchased the dog to see if they could get him straight but to no avail. The dog just wouldn’t leave my side and would cower when the shot would go off. I was about to give up on the dog. Billy tried answering my questions and even offered for me drive down from Virginia to spend a day working with him to see if we could figure out a solution to my dog’s problem. I drove down to Shelby to work with Billy and two of his helpers. We spent the entire day running the dog through different things using cap guns, primers and real shells. Billy was very patient and spent time just studying the dog’s actions as we tried different things under different scenarios. I was amazed at how he had the ability to connect with my dog. In the end, it was determined that it wasn’t actually gun shyness, we figured out that the previous trainer had used a heeling stick too aggressively to control his breaking issues, and Gunner began to associate the gun shot with being slapped with the heeling stick. Billy showed me some drills to do and gave me some things to do with him when I got home and I can happily say gunner is having a great time now in the duck blind.
Billy wouldn’t let me pay him for his help; he did it out of the goodness of his heart because he sincerely cares about the dogs. When I got my second dog, Rebel, I took him to Billy for training. He is doing great also and did well in hunt tests. I highly recommend Billy to anyone that asks where to send their dog for training. Even though there are trainers closer to my location, Billy has the ability to adjust his training style to meet the temperament of the dogs under his care which you don’t’ find in a lot of trainers.

If you are looking for an outstanding trainer for your retriever and you find Avery Creek Retrievers you can stop looking. You will not find a more honest, hard working, dedicated and talented professional trainer than Billy Mosley. His passion for training and love for the dogs is clearly evident as you watch each dog he trains work for him. One of the things we all love about our dogs is that they are always honest with us; if they are bored they show us, if they are excited they show us, if they respect us they show us, and if they don't respect us they show us that as well. When you are with Billy and one of they dogs that he has trained whether it be at a hunt test, a duck blind, or just an average day at his kennels one thing is perfectly clear the dogs he trains honestly love and respect him. This is something that I have not always seen when I have watched other trainers with their dogs at a hunt test before.
Personally, I sent my dog to Avery Creek Retrievers after being severely let down by another pro trainer before I found Billy. When my dog arrived for training he was timid, confused and full of potential. When I picked him up he was a confident, driven retrieving machine who had regained his love for retrieving. When I picked him up, Billy was there to take the time to show me what I needed to do to maintain the level of training he had achieved and to build on that base so that we could continue to grow as a team. This was also my dog's first year to hunt with me, the entire season he was a gentleman in the boat, blind, or field; and a driven animal on all his retrieves. He is a dog that I am proud to take into any hunting situation, confident that he will behave and do his part to enhance our enjoyment of our time afield.
I have had experiences with several different trainers and have been overwhelmed by the complete experience in working with Avery Creek Retrievers. Billy will bring out the most in your dog. Whether you want a dog to work beside you in the field or compete in hunt tests, he will do what is necessary to get you and your dog there. I am always happy to endorse and recommend Billy Mosley and Avery Creek Retrievers to anyone who wants the best for their dog and themselves.

Avery Creek Retrievers has taken great care of our dog for the past year. He was sent to Billy Mosley for training last July as an unruly puppy lacking any measurable attention span. When we visited out dog a few weeks later, he was a controlled young dog able to listen and obey commands. My family was able to take him on a walk inside the Bass Pro Outdoor World store without any mishap. Quite the achievement, when considering all the people and sales displays around to distract him. Our Labrador Retriever has earned his HRC Started Hunting Retriever title this last spring and is working to earn a Seasoned Hunting Retriever title this fall. Since he is now so well behaved, the family considered the funds spent on his training as money well spent! I look forward to the days we will spend hunting, but I know the wait will be worth it. I recommend Billy Mosley’s training services with Avery Creek Retrievers for anyone who wants to get the most out of their dog.
